Glycosylated hemoglobins represented, by A_<1c> are considered to be clinically useful indicators of the state of a long-term blood sugar control. The, authors determined the level of hemoglobin A_1 (hereinafter referred to as HbA_1 in pregnant women with abnormal sugar tolerance for the purpose of investigating its clinical application. l ) The HbA_1 value determined in each stage of pregnancy of normal women and in their puerperal period was about the same as that determined in non-pregnant women. 2) The pregnant women whose blood sugar level was judged by O.G.T.T. (50g) to be within the D.M. range, especially those who were insufficiently controlled for blood sugar were remarkably higher in HbA_1 value than normal pregnant women. 3) HbA_1 value was well correlated with the F.B.S and peak value determined at the time of O.G.T.T., and the value was proved to be an important indicator of blood sugar control. 4) There was no significant difference in HbA_1 value among the three groups of pregnant women classified by fetal development, that is, the S.F.D., L.F.D. and A.F.D. groups.
