ALTERATIONS IN CLINICAL RESPONSES TO VARYING DOSAGES OF ESTROGEN AND CHLORMADINONE ACETATE IN CYCLIC THERAPY

The clinical effect of various dosages of ethinyl estradiol/mestranol and chlormadinone acetate was studied in 402 patients for a period of 3943 cycles. A good cycle control was observed in the ethinyl estradiol-chlormadinone acetate sequential therapy. No large deviation of endometrial histology from normal cyclic changes was observed during this therapy. On the other hand, high incidence of breakthrough bleeding was noted in the combination therapy with low estrogen potency. Conversely, nausea occurred more frequently during medication with high estrogen potency. Breast complaints were significantly higher in the combination regimen consisting of ethinyl estradiol and chlormadinone acetate. Variability in the individual responsiveness to exogenous or endogenous estrogen and/or progestogen seems to be the source of the difference of patients' reactions to the preparations, beneficial in some and undesirable in others.
