Chapter I Studies on the Contractibility of the Non-pregnant Human Uterus. Various researches have been carried out on the uterine contractibility by many predecessors, but they are all based on experiments on the animal uterus, and not on the human uterus. Only recently in foreign countries publications were made by H. Alvarez on the tonus of a pregnant human uterus. Also Henry and Brown's research is an observation on the action of estrogen and progesterone on the non-pregnant and pregnant human uterus. In Japan there is no such work yet concerning the contractibility of the human uterus. In the present work the tonus of the human uterus was successfully measured by means of the apparatus used in hydrotubation, that is the insufflation of physiologic salt solution into the tubal cavity, as described by Prof. Yagi. The tonus of the non-pregnant uterus was first studied in patients whose Fallopian tubes had both been diagnosed as occuluded at the uterine corner. Method of experiment : One end of a pump is inserted into the cervical cavity, while its other end is connected to a glass tube, which is further connected to a tambour through a glass tube respectively, and the tonus of line uterus is recorded on a cymograph. Results of experiment : 1) The sensibility of the uterus to pituitrin is apparently elevated in persons previously treated with estrogen. 2) The action of the estrogen intensifying the sensibility of the human uterus to pituitrin has thus been clarified in the present experiment, although it had long remained uncertain, so far as the human uterus was concerned. 3) In the experiment carried out on the same person in each menstrual cycle, it has been revealed that the sensibility of the uterus is the highest on the 5th day, next highest on the 16th day, and the lowest on the 25th day after menstruation respectively. 4) Because of its action intensifying the sensibility of the human uterus to pituitrin, the administration of the follicular hormone may be considered clinically an effective method for the treatment of the genital hypoplasia. Chapter II Studies on the Contractibility of the Pregnant Human Uterus. Method of the experiment : A needle is inserted into the uterine cavity through the abdominal and the uterine walls, while a glass tube connected to the end of the needle is further connected to a tambour and the tonus of the uterus is recorded on a cymograph, as described in Chapter I. Material of the experiment : Uterus of the pregnant women after the 5 th month of pregnancy indicated to the artificial abortion. Results of experiment : 1) The pregnant uterus shows, regardless of the number of the gravid months, generally an irregular contraction as expressed in the contraction curve. 2) The contraction curves of the uterus of the pregnant women previously treated with estrogen are generally the same, with the exception of one case which showed a stronger contraction, as those of the pregnant women without treatment, so far as the units of the hormone used are under 100,000 u. 3) When the estrogen was injected in higher dose than 100,000 u., the uterus generally showed a stronger contraction than when the estrogen used was under 100,000 u., although no notable intensification of the contraction was observed in some cases. 4) Based on its action intensifying the contractibility of the pregnant uterus, estrogen was used for the induction of labor, which was successful in 9 cases out of 36. 5) It has long been a question, which of the two, the estrogen or the progesterone, is indicated to the threatened as well as the habitual abortion. The result of the present experiment may afford an answer to this question. Chapter III Studies on the Contractibility of the Puerperal Human Uterus. Method of experiment : As described in Chapter I.
