The phagocytic function of leucocytes is affected by various kinds of physical, chemical as well as biological stimulations. In the present studies the phagocytic function of leucocytes was investigated by means of a method modified by Tobler, from viewpoints of some such stimulations in the obstetrical and gynecological fields. The results obtained are as follows ; 1) The phagocytic function of leucocytes drops during the menstruation, but rises again in the postmenstrual stage. 2) After laparotomy it rises in proportion to the amount of operative stimulations, particularly high when the operation is followed by the parametritis, whereas it drops gradually when no complication occurs after the operation, so that it is closely connected with the prognosis of the laparotomy. Such rise of the phagocytic function of leucocytes associated with the laparotomy may be presumably due to the resorption of some substances produced by the decomposition of the body proteins. 3) It rises gradually in pregnancy, arriving at the peak at the time of delivery. The phagocytic power of leucocytes of the adult is the highest, followed by that of the new-born, and that of the child at the breast is the lowest, In the new-born as in the adult, however, its temporal rise was observed, following the stimulation of the hematopoetic organs by the intraosseal blood transfusion.
