The author attempted to investigate on the yearly variation of the weight of new-borns and the placenta as well as the duration of pregnancy based on 17324 cases of deliveries in the Saiseikai Maternity Hospital of Tokyo during past 17 years. The results obtained are as follows: 1) The weight of new-borns and the placenta began and continued a trend of decrease since 1943, arrived at its bottom in 1946, only to show a tendency of rapid increase after 1947, arriving again at the normal value in 1949. 2) As to the duration of pregnancy, no notable tendency was noted except a slight yearly variation. 3) It might be considered therefore that at least the decrease of the weight of new-borns and the placenta has no connection with the shortened duration of pregnancy. 4) It might be correctly assumed that such yearly variation of the weight of new-borns and the placenta may be rather due to the nutrition of the expectant mothers closely connected with the shortage of food during war-time.
