In various types of anemia the hematocrit value and hemoglobin concentration were calculated by means of Copper sulfate method after a formula, which had been made available for Japanese by Hiradei and Sato, instead of Van Slyke formula, with a view to examining its clinical reliability. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The average values of the specific gravities of red blood cells (Gc) and the hemoglobin concentration (Hbc) are 1.085±0.186 and 26.6±4.54, respectively. 2. The deviation of the actually surveyed values of the hematocrit and hemoglobin concentration from those calculated after Hiradei formula are respectively -4.59±3.45 and +0.04±0.94. 3. The hematocrit values are generally reliable, as Gc is relatively constant, although their actual survey is sometimes necessary because of the fact that their slight aberration are unavoidable when Gc deviates markedly from the constant (of Hiradei and Sato). 4. Some errors of the calculated values of the hemoglobin concentration are not avoidable, when the change of Gc and Hbc is not in good harmony, which, however, does not occur as a rule. 5. So far as the hemoglobin concentration is concerned, its calculation formula, which was made available for a Japanese by Hiradei and Sato, is more reliable than Sahli method, which has hitherto been in general use. Accordingly, the Hiradei formula is preferable to Phillip and Van Slyke formula using the copper sulfate method.
