It is generally agreed, as in the case of some species of rodentia injected with urine of pregnant women, the Aschheim-Zondek test or the Friedman-Schneider's ovulation test as it is called, that women infected with anterior pituitary hormone respond with the formation of hemorrhagic follicles accompanying corpora lutea in their ovaries. Very little, however, has been revealed so far as to the minimum effective amounts of the hormone to be injected, histologic changes of ovaries in detail along with those of the uterine mucosa, etc. In the present experiment some fifty patients indicated to the extirpation of uterus together with adnexa of both sides were previously treated with the intravenous injection of the serum of women of 2.-4. months of pregnancy presumably containing anterior pituitary hormone, and a few days later the ovaries and the uterine mucosa were histolgically examined along with the quantitative measurement of that hormone in the urine by means of the ovulation test. The results obtained are summarized as follows: (I) In case of patients over 35 years of age suffering from uterine cancer or myoma uteri with physiologic ovulatory function: 1) In 32 cases out of 35 injected with the serum of pregnant women containing over 166 rabbit-units of the anterior pituitary hormone 1-6 hemorrhagic follicles as well as fresh corpora lutea were observed, associated with marked hemorrhage in the degenerated corpora lutea or the ground substance. In the minimum amounts of the hormone required for the artificial ovulation no remarkable difference was observed before and after the regular ovulation. 2) Histologic finding in uterine mucosa and ovaries: a) Uterine mucosa: In case of injection over several days prior to the regular ovulation secretary period attributable to the action of the artificial corpora lutea was not observed, while in case of injection immediately ahead of the regular ovulation it was constantly noted, and in case of injection following the regular ovulation no marked change was detectable. b) Ovaries: Cell layer of the artificial corpora lutea was remarkably thin, wavy foldings were also generally undistinguished, while the central blood clot was much larger than that of the physiologic corpora lutea, existing considerably long after the injection. (II) In 5 cases of metropathia hemorrhagica injected with the serum of pregnant women containing over 50 rabbit-units of the anterior pituitary hormone formation of corpora lutea was noted without exception, associated with the transformation of the uterine mucosa into secretary period followed by the withdrawal of bleeding. In that case corpus luteum formed was usually one, its histologic picture almost resembling to that of the physiologic one, with marked wavy foldings and small central clot. (III) In case of 4 old women 1-6 years after menopause injected with the serum of pregnant women containing 166-500 rabbit-units of the anterior pituitary hormone no formation of corpora lutea was recognized whatsoever in the resected ovaries.
