Antibiotic or bactericidal action of a chemotherapeutic compound is promoted when used together with another one. For example, penicillin that has originally little effect on Gram negative bacteria develops an excellent effectiveness on that bacteria when administered along with Urethan, Mapharsen, etc. In the present studies the antibiotic or bactericidal actions of Penicillin crystalline G, Chlorophyllin, Urea, Urethan, Marfanil, Sulfathiazole and Rivanol respectively on Staphylococcus and a number of Gram negative bacilli such as bac. colli communis, bac. coli communior, bac. acidi lactici, bac. fecalis alcaligenes, pseudomonas aeruginosa were investigated, first, bacteriologically in vitro, comparing the action of each chemotherapeutic compound in single use with that in combined administration. Each experiment belonging to the combined administration was divided into two groups, one (group 1) with a certain amount of sterilisized human serum added to the mixtures of the chemotherapeutic compounds to be tested, thus signifying the experiment in vivo, and the other (group 2) without an addition of the serum. The result of the investigation is such that the actions of most of the chemotherapeutic compounds in combined administration are, as has been theoretically expected, considerably stronger as comrared with the actions of those in single use, so far as the experiments of the group 2 are concerned. In the experiments of the group 1, however, the actions of most of the mixtures of the same chemotherapeutic compounds as in the group 2 were somewhat weaker in general. This shows that such mixtures are weakened to some extent by the human serum in their effectiveness, and are therefore not adequate for clinical use. The only e ception is the following mixture, which is remarkably strong in its bectericidal action and is therefore considered the most suitable for the clinical applications. Rp. Penicillin crystalline G 1000 u/cc Urethan 1% Rivanol 0.1% Further studies are now being carried on with regard to its clinical applicability.
