• The concept of the fetus as patient necessarily involves significant maternal considerations. Strategies to treat the fetus in-utero must take into account the potential immediate and long term effects on the mother. Fetal surgery, especially open fetal surgery, is an example where the mother is exposed to significant risks. These risks and strategies to reduce them will be discussed. In addition, maternal outcome following open fetal surgery with be reported. As will be seen, the approach to the fetal surgical patient is management by a multi-specialty team.
