• Equilibrium configurations which are stable with respect to ideal magnetohy-drodynamic perturbations and the corresponding beta limitations (:253) areobtained for reversed field pinches with ideal (delta-function) as well as diffusedsurface current profiles with the plasma separated from the wall. Since the surfacecurrent can be driven by a radio-frequency wave, such a scheme makes continuousoperation of the reversed field pinch feasible.
