Density-Matrix Renormalization Group Study on an Impurity Symmetrically Coupled to a Quantum Heisenberg Chain

We calculate the inaptrrity strsceptibility for a spin-172 naagnetic iunpttrity symnaetrically cotr-pled to its two nearest-neighbor spins in an antiferrornagnetic Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain. Thisis done by extending White's density-uaaatrix renormalization group (DIN/IRG) technique to finitetemperatures. It is found that the itmpttrity sttsceptibility satisfies Cturie laxv at low tempera-ttmres, and tl'xat the Curie constant decreases rapidly with increasing cottpling constarnt lcetxveenthe irnpurity spin and the spins in the chain. For strong cotrplings, a logarithmic dependenceof the susceptibility on temperattrre eunerges. The Ctrrie law behavior agrees with the DIVIRGanalysis at zero teumperatvtre bvrt deviates frona the prediction of conformal field theory.
