The Ordered Phase of p-Chloronitrobenzene Studied by Raman Spectroscopy

p-Chloronitrobenzene exhibit an order-disorder phase transition at 282K. The high tenaperattrre disordered phase has P21 /c sytnnaetry xvith txvo taaolectrles per trnit cell. A statisticallycentrosytnunetric array restmlts from the sttjcerposition of molectrles occtrpying regtrlar latticesites btrt facing rsrndomly opposite directions. The ordered IOXV temperattrre phase strtrctturecould not be resolved yet. In the present work, Ranaan spectroscopy tneasuretaaents were carriedout as a function of temperattrre in the r?rnge 5 K -300 K in ordered and disordered phases of p-chloronitrobenzene. Syuaarnetry information o['the ordered trnknown phase was obtained. A corn-parison of experirnental results with Raman spectra of p-dihalobenzenes and p-dinitrobenzenehas been carried out and possible raaoIecul?tr arrangetaaents are discussed throttgh lattice dynamicscalculations.
