Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) has been tused to study the surface structure and elec-tronic states of cv-Sn(Ill) films grown heteroepitaxially on InSb(111)A-(2 x 2). The wide areaSTM image shows a large number of dounains existing on the terrace, each having an averagesize of about 100 A and a period of (2 x 2). The znagnified image shows evidence of a T,j-adatomand rest-atom pair reconstructed structure for the 01-SIX(111)-(2 x 2) surface, as expected frornthe ab initio calculations. Ftmrtherrnore, the result that the adatom and the rest-atorn appearsimultaneously in the occupied state image can be explained by the existence of back bond statesin the adatom configuration.
