Ion Motions in Magnetosonic Shock Waves with Relativistic Propagation Speeds

Jon motions in shock waves propagating perpendictrlar to a rnaxgnetic field are studied throtrghtheory and sinaulation; the shocks xvith relativistic propagation speeds are considered. In strchshocks the longitttdinal electric fields are less inaportant than in nonrelativistic ones. Fronu tlaeanalysis of Jon orbits it is found that Ton velocities parallel to the wave front can be conaparableto the shock propagation speed v.? in the pulse region. Expressions f'or ion energies, whichcan be relativistic, are given 21S a f'trnction of' the shock propagation speed. Then, sitntrlatiotasof shock waves are perforraaed by LISCI of a one-ditatensional, relativistic, electronaagnetic particlecode with full ion and electron dynatunics. The shock speeds in the sitaatrlations xvere in the range0.5< v.5 /c< 0.9. The sitaatrlation restmlts on ion orbits and energies are cornpared in detail withthe theory.
