Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Investigation of the Ferroelectric Transition in N_2H_5Al (SO_4)_2・12H_2O Crystals

The EPR spectra exhi bited by the doped Cr" tons is sensitive to the reported low-temperatttreferroelectric transition in N2H5Al(804)2?12H2O crystals. Strtmcttural informations that can bededtrced from the experirnental results include: (1) the appearance of merohedral twinningis concurrent with the onset of the structural phase transition; (2) the crystalline three['o1dsymmetry, which is lost with the onset of the structural phase transition, becotnes the twinlaw relating the orientations of' the counponent domains; (3) the crystal symmetry below thetransition tenuperattmre is orthorhombic; (4) the crystalline cttbic axes of the high-teraaperature,cubic phase becorne the three crystalline twofold axes of the low-tetnperature, orthorhotnbicphase; and (5) a single Cr" species is detected in both the ctrbic and the orthorhombic phases,which implies that all the Al" sites are crystallographically eqtmivalent in both phases.
