Miller's rule for the second harmonic generation and the nonlinear response in nonferroelectricphase transitions were studied on the basis of inversion formtrlae derived by Nakada [J. Phys.Soc. Jpn. 15 (1960) 22803. Firstly, Nakada's inversion fortnulae were generalized so that they areapplicable to multi-variable systenas within a phenotnenological theory. Then, with the use ofthem the condition for lVIiller's rtrle to hold valid is clarified. In nonferroelectric phase transitionsit was shown that the nonlinear dielectric strsceptibility is proportional to the linear strsceptibilityof the order parameter and so diverges at the transition point.
