Sequential transitions of the thermal convection in a square cavity heated frona below areinvestigated up to the time periodic state by nunaerical sirnulation, The flow field is assumedto be two-dimensional and all the boundaries are assumed to be rigid and perfectly therrnalconducting as a mathematical taaodel. The Prandtl nurnber is fixed as P : 7. Three typicalsolvrtions are found for three values of the Rayleigh nvrmber Ra. To explain the restrlts ofnumerical simtnlation, the stability of the rnotionless state, the nonlinear equilibrium solutionsof the thernaal convection, and the stability of the eqtrilibritrm states are investigated, and thebifvnrcation diagram is obtained for a wide range of Ra. The dynamical properties of the solutionsobtained by numerical simulation are proved to be explained quite well from the bif'urcationdiagram obtained by the stability analyses,
