Temperature dependence of ultraviolet (uv) emission from CN , which was in-troduced into surface layers of Nail and KCI crystals by electron irradiation, was investigated. From the comparison with uv emission from electron- and X-ray ir-radiated NaCl:CN and KCI:CN, it was found that temperature dependences of uvemission from surface and bulk CN- are much different from each other, in spite of agood agreement in the spectral shape. It was also found that there is a good correspondence among uv emission from surface CN , exoelectron emission and desorp-tion of constituent atoms. It is confirmed that the thermal instability of surface hole-centers plays an important role on the emission mechanism of surface CN .[cyanide ion, alkali halide, ultraviolet emission, electron irradiation, exoelec- lg tron, surface defectl
