Semi-Empirical Estimation of β-Strength Functions and Delayed Neutron Emission Probabilities

A semi-empirical method of estimating the /Z-strength function from data onthree neighbouring nuclides, which was originally devised for a special class ofnuclei, is applied to a wider class of odd-mass nuclei. When good experimentaldata are available on the neighbouring nuclides, the estimated /?-strength func-tions generally reproduce the trend of experimental ones fairly well, although aserious discrepancy is found for "Ca suggesting the inadequacy of this method nearthe doubly closed shell. Delayed neutron emission probabilities are calculated withuse of the estimated /j-strength functions. An agreement wijh experiment withina factor of two is obtained provided that the /?-strength function is based on goodinput data on the neighbouring nuclides.
