Studies of Z_4 Centers in KCl: Ca Crystals

Optical properties of the Z. absorption band and the Z. emission band havebeen investigated. Z. centers grow at the expe?ase of M centers above -40x30'C. Peak position and the half height width of the absorption band areindependent of the divalent contaminations and they depend only on the hostcrystal. They, however, depend on the temperature where Z. centers were produced. The excitation spectra, temperature variation of tlne emission intensity,and temperature variations of the half height width of the absorption and theemission bands were observed. The Z. emission band is located at 1.1 l eV at LNT.The quantum yield of the Z. omission is about 0.35 at LNT. 'the optical parameterwere determined: v.=5.92 x 10" cps and v.=4 x 10" cps. 'The energy differencebetween the first excited state and the bottom of the conduction band is 0.256 eV.The Z. center has an absorption band at 2.15 eV which is related to its higherexcited state.
