A nonlinear theory of the collision[ess drift wave is developed in a plannergeometry with an arbitrary one-dimensional density profile. An equation describ-ing the potential variation in the direction of dertsity gradiertt is derived. Thedispersion relation and the corresponding waveforxa't are obtained from solutionsof an eigenvalue problem. A special deu?sity profile is analyzed in detail. It isshown that the drift wave is localized in the ,v-direction and also has a solitarywave structure in the y-z plane, which is descri[>ecl by a modified Korteweg-deVries eqtmation.
