The transverse and longitudinal wave measurement on polystyrene and polymethyl methacrylate was carried out at frequencies of 0.5, 1, and 2.25Mc, in the temperature range 20℃ to 190℃. For the transverse wave measurement, a modified rotating plate method was used. An energy-dissipating process associated with volume deformation was found in these polymers. The activation energy associated with shear deformation is somewhat different from that associated with volume deformation, so that the molecular mechanism involved in the two types of deformation may be different.
