A linear theory of electrohydrodynaznic instability of a perf'ectly conducting liquid .jet injectedfrorn a capillary tube which is raised to a high DC voltage is presented. The effects of electricfield strength and its configuration, jet velocity and physical properties of fluids are considered inthe derived eqvration for disturbance growth rate. It is shown that the .jet instability is sensitiveto the electric field strength. The axisynan'retric mode of instalcility is dominant at low electricfield strength. With increasing electric field strength the nonaxisymrnetric mode of instabilityis intensified. Moreover as the electric field strength is increased, the breakup wavelength isdecreased, which means the decrease in droplet size. Good agreements are obtained betweenthe theoretical and experirnental lcreaktrp wavelengths for the axisynumetric taaode at low electricfield strength. However, the breakup xvavelengths for the nonaxisymrnetric mode in practice arelarger than those predicted by the theoretical analysis.
