The effective mass of spring is experimentally investigated by measuring the spring constantK, the spring mass m, the suspended mass Ai, and the oscillation period T. It is found that,as the naass ratio Mum increases beyond 7, the effective l112LSS m' of spring, defined by T'4m'(M -p m")/K, becomes smaller than Rayleigh's value m/3 and eventtrally reaches negativevalttes. This trnexpected behavior of' the effective mass seems to be explainable in ternas of theelastic after-effect.
