Effects of a Crystal Field on the Orientational Phase Transition in a System of Dipoles:A Mean-Field Study of SO_2-β-Hydroquinone Clathrate

The orientational ordering in a system of dipolar molecules located on a trigonal lattice isstudied in the eight-stmblattices approximation. Our concrete example is 802 molecules enclosedin /17-hydroquinone cJathrate. It is assutned that the molectules interact with each other viaeffective dipole-dipole interactions, and that the crystal field acting on those rnolecules is of theform 11/,4 : Ccos[r(: - d.q)], where</>is a rotational angle and A is a sublattice nurnber. If Z/is an odd integer, we asstrme that (5A rnay be different for different A. The mean electric fieldwhich depends on the depolarization field is obtained, Various cases of C, v, 75) are investigated.Results are as follows: the possible dipole arrangement is antiferroelectric in all cases; the phasetransition for 1/ :: 2, 4, 5, 6 is of second order; if Z/ : l, no disordered phase occurs; if 1/ : 3,the phase transition is weakly of first order except f'or special cases; the C dependence of thetransition tenaperature is weak unless v = 2; (5A chiefly determines the equilibritrm direction. Acomparison with experiment strggests that the low-teunperature phase of SOz-/V-hydroquinonehas v :: 2 or 3, and that interactions between enclosed 803 molecules other than dipole-dipoleinteractions may be also effective.
