Magneto-optic effect on the photonic band strvxcttxre is investigated by tlae numerical calcu-Nation. When the magneto-optic anisotropy is applied to photonic crystals, the energetically-degenerate electromagnetic xvaves propagating along the anisotropy direction show the Faradayeffect, as in an tzniforrn dielectric system. On the other harnd, the electrounagnetic waves, whichare not degenerate and are propagating perpendicular to the anisotropy direction, also show themagneto-optic effect similar to the Faraday one and its nragnitude is propotional to the squareof the magneto-optic anisotropy, being qtrite different frotn the case in trnifortaa dielectrics. Theorigin of such effect is shown Iceing intrinsic to the photonic band strttctures, by trsing the groupand perturbation theories.
