We investigate numerically how a solitary wave propagates in some one-dimensional diatomicperiodic and aperiodic Toda lattices. It is found that a nearly stable wave of rather high amplitude can propagate in the periodic lattice. For several of the deterministic aperiodic sequencesconsidered, the darnping of the wave in the corresponding lattice is considerable less than for arandom lattice. The short range correlation between the atorns in the aperiodic lattices seemsto be of znain importance for how mtuch the wave is daunped. We suggest therefore that theentropy according to Shannon might be a relevant rrreasure for the properties of the lattices inthis case. It is shown that this tneasure yields at least an approximative agreement with whatis actually achieved b)' OLII numerical experinaents. It is also shown that the earlier proposedidea of viewing the process as multiple scattering cannot be applied to other cases than randomseqtuences with small mass-differences.
