We present a rigorous study of a planar waveguide which, under the influence ofunintentional or deliberate effects, takes the forn'u of a parabolic cylindricalwaveguide. Extending 0LLI earlier study on this problem, where some physically plausi-ble assumptions were rnade, we now develop the characteristics and the cutoff condi-Lion equations for sucla a waveguide under mathematically rigorous conditions. It isfound that results again show a bunclaing tendency of modal cutoff confirming thevalidity of our earlier results, Mode-bunching is thus found to be a fundamental char-acteristic of parabolically bent slab waveguides.optical waveguides, fibre optics
