Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains for .5: 1 ttnd S=2 are treated numeri-cally. We investigate a generalized 6-string correlation function fl,7(,/)=(Sfexp(i0 >,',7-', S'?)55 >w'hich is a generalization of the string correlation function of denNijs-Rommelse. W'hen the value of ?lies in an appropriate region, tlae phase of (f),( j )is fixed and Og( 7) behaves smoothly as a function of j. This means alternative signchanges of the usual spin-spin correlation C.=.( j ) are well canceled in 0(, ( j ) for suchvalues of 0. The cancellation is best at 0= n and n /2for the S= 1 and 2 cases, respec-lively. The generalized string which appears in the 2-str'ing correlation function playsa role similar to that of a fictitious gauge potential in the definition of the hiddenorder parameter of the i'ractional quantized Hall state by Girvin and MacDonald.
