With the aid of projection operators P originally used by Zwanzig, phenomenological equations of irreversible thermodynamics CQII be derived from theLiouville equation. The phenomenological coefficients are expressed in ternts of timecorrelations L.(t) in which (1 -P)iL replaces the Liouville operator L int the for-malism of Mori. Following a procedure of Lee, L. is calculated via an expansion oftime-dependent functions in orthogonal basis functions which are made finite innumber by adjustment of P. By this adjustment, one obtains a variety of analyticalforms for L.(t) which need not decay rapidly in order to yield phenomenologicalequations in Markovian form. Flexibility in P can compensate for closure andMarkovian approximations.
