X-ray diffraction, "Fe M6ssbauer spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility measurements have been performed in the temperature range 4.2-293 K on theAl..Fe..Ta.. icosahedral alloy. It was found that Fe atoms are distributed among amultiplicity of sites, which was interpreted as evidence of intrinsic disorder characteristic for icosahedral alloys. It was shown that the distribution of electric quadrupoleinteractions is better described by the Gaussian shape than by the shape predicted bythe shell model. It was found that Al..Fe..Ta.. is not magnetically ordered. We findthat Al,.Fe..Ta,. is a paramagnet and that the claim made in the literature of thesimultaneous occurrence of Curie-like and Pauli paramagnetism is an artifactresulting from previously unconsidered second phases.
