A model with coupling between the orientation of molecule and the interlayer spacing is introduced to investigate a mechanism of the first order phase transition foundin a certain antiferroelectric liquid crystal. By the decimation transformation, themodel is reduced to an Ising model of .5:: 1 with biquadratic exchange interaction andzero field splitting, in which the first order phase transition is shown to occur for thecase of reasonable values of pararneters appearing in the model.[antiferroelectric liquid crystals, the first order phase transition, Ising model of lg S = 1, the thermodynamical states, hard-core repulsion[
