The absorption cross section of a system of two spheres is derived by an analyticmethod based on the separability of the Laplace equation in bispherical coordinates.The method is applicable in the non-retarded limit, i.e., for sphere radius small incomparison with the wavelength of the impinging electromagnetic radiation. Theevolvement of the absorption spectrum with decreasing distance between the spheresis demonstrated by numerical calculations. The implications on the interpretation ofexperimental infrared absorption spectra of small crystallites are discussed.
