The effect of dissipation on the propagation of an envelope soliton or of solitons inthe bound state has been investigated through numerical integration of the nonlinearSchr6dinger equation with a dissipation term. The evolution of solitons stronglydepends on the strength of dissipation. In the case of one soliton, the damping ratediminishes with time as the amplitude becomes small and the nonlinear or dispersionterm becomes comparable to the dissipation term. The bound state of two solitons isdestroyed by an intermediate dissipation and breaks into two pulses of equalamplitude. The destruction of the bound state does not occur in the case of weak orstrong dissipation.
