Stability of the m = l mode is examined in the presence of external m = 0 perturba-tions, i.e., toroidal field ripple arising from the discreteness of toroidal coils.Response of the plasma is takem? into account self-cc>nsistently tusing the Bessel Func-lion Model. The A' criterion and energy principle are applied to the system and thestability of the m = l resistive and ideal modes is shown to be improved by reducingthe toroidal ripple.
