A full description of the previously proposed method of calculating low tempera-ture specific heat and susceptibility of quantum spin chains are given. By the useof internal energy as the expansion variable the domain of convergence of the hightemperature series is remarkably extended. The low temperature properties areobtained b>' continuinx it in a natural way to r>ol>rnomials in internal enerxv, whose form is suggested by the spin wave theory. The method is checked in theS = 1/2 XY model and is then arrlied to the Heisenberg model of .5: 1 /2, 1, 3 /2and 2. The results are satisfactory in ferromagnets and reasonable in the .5= l /2antiferromagnet. In antiferromagnets of S 41 the results suggest inadequacy ofour polynomial, which is, presumably, due to the existence of an energy gap.
