The atomic radius and the actual valence dependence of the band electronenergy has been calculated by using a model d-band for transition metals in awide range of atomic radius to cover the interstitial configuration as well as thenormal equilibrium lattice site. From this calculation the pressure acting on aninterstitial atom has been estimated and compared with the migration tempera-ture determined experimentally for 3d, 4d and 5d transition group elements. Theanomalously high migration temperatures of interstitials in the titanium group canbe explained by the present theory. The low migration temperatures for thecopper group elements are also discussed.
