The magnitude and temperature dependence of energy gaps in Cr-rich Cr-Alalloys are obtained by infrared reflectivity measurements at wavelengths from l to40 micrometers. This alloy system is intriguing because it exhibits both incom-mensurate and commensurate itinerate electron antiferromagnetism (AFM) aswell as semiconducting properties, depending on Al concentration. Single-crystalalloys with up to 6.4'%A1 are studied, and polycrystalline alloys of 19 to 38%AI.Alloys with up to l at'%Al exhibit absorptions near 0.12 and 0.45 eV, similar topure Cr. Alloys of 1.4 and 1.9%AI show no temperature-dependent structurewhich can be associated with itinerate AFM and corroborate the recent suggestionof an intermediate magnetic state between 1.1 and 3%AI. Alloys containing 3to 6.4%A1 have absorption near 0.35 eV which is attributed to commensurateAFM ordering. Alloys with 19 and 27'll4Al exhibit absorptions near 0.3 and0.041 eV, corresponding to commensurate magnetic order and semiconductor-like structure, respectively.
