Concentration Dependence of Spin-Lattice Relaxation Rates and Thermal Equilibrium in Ruby under High Magnetic Fields

A cln"omium ion concentration dependence of spin-lattice relaxation in thechromium ion ground state 'A. in ruby (A1.0.; Cr") was measured in highmagnetic fields from 69 K0e to 135 KOe. A critical Cr" concentration is foundto be about O.16'%, above which the spin-lattice relaxation rates show a strongconcentration dependence and the electron distribution in 'A., quartet spinstates, is interpreted in terms of a single spin temperature. From these facts it isconcluded that only in the high concentration region, energy transfers amongsingle Cr' " ions take place and electron spin states are in a thermal equilibrium.
