Heat Capacities of Rb_2ZnBr_4 between 3 and 300 K-Thermodynamic Properties of Its Incommensurate Phase Transitions

The heat capacity of Rb.ZnBr. was measured from 3 to 300 K. The commens-urate-incommensurate phase transition (so-called lock-in transition) showedvery small anomaly of the first-order at (193.6-5.0.3) K with Jff.=(9.3.5.1.0)J-mol ' and d5.=(0.048f0.005) J?K '=mol '. Below the lock-in transition,two phase transitions were observed. A typical second-order anomaly was at(1ll.7.b0.2)KwithU#.=(47i5)J-mol-'and,1.5.=(0.45.L.0.05)J-K '-mol '.Another anomaly was observed at (76.5fO.1) K with Jf.=(2.0.50.3) J-mol "and J.5t=(0.027i0.004) J?K "=mol ". A unified treatment of the successivetransitions in K.Se0., Rb.ZnCl., and Rb.ZnBr. is given based on a Landau-type phenomenological theory. Numerical calculation of heat capacities andentropies of the lock-in transitions showed general agreement with the expert-mental results.
