Performance of a ^<241>Am Compton Spectrometer and Compton Profile of Polycrystalline Al

A 7-ray Compton spectrometer using a 200 mCi "'Am source and a HPGedetector has been designed and built. The performance of the spectremeter hasbeen compared with similar spectremeters operating in other laboratories. Theeffect of air scattering frem different air columns was studied. It was found tohave no effect on the high energy side of the profile except that the profile becomesasymmetric. The equipment was tested for its potential use in Compton profile(CP) studies by making,a measurement on polycrystalline aluminium. The meas-ured profile has a good overall agreement with existing experimental and theore-tical results. It shows a much better break near the Fermi momentum and is inbetter agreement with x-ray results. Our results for the Fermi momentum qp,0.917f0.0l0a.u., determined from the experimental autocorrelation functionB(r) agrees fairly well with theories.
