• Chemi-ionization cross sections of Ar and N. by He(2'S) and excitation transfercross sections from the first excited configuration of Ar to N. have been measuredby monitoring emissions from N. at 600 K. Helium and argon atoms are excitedby an electron beam of energy close to the energy of the level concerned and anycontributions from higher excited states can be excluded. Cross sections obtainedare 9.4211:I, 7.9:9z4, 29!?; and 8.7iQzg A' for lie(2'S)-Ar, He(2'S)-N., Ar('P.)-N. and Ar('P)-N., respectively. The values are larger than other measurementsat room temperature and are consistent with an energy dependent cross section.
