Production of a spheromak configuration is attexnpted by using a theta jpinchcombined with a z-discharge. A loop current which is formed by a z-discltargecurrent flowing in the plasma and reversing on its surface generates a toroidalfield in the spheromak. Mechanism of the currertt reversal is explained fromtoroidal flux cornservation in the plasma during implosion phase of the thetatcinch. It is found that the reverse ratio is controlle<i in actual experiments Icy anexternal inductarnce of the z-discharge circuit, a Ierrgth and a compression ratioof the plasma. Experiments show that 7O'7; reversal of the z-current is easilyrealized using a conventional theta pinch.
