Numerical studies on linear growth rate of resistive tearing mode in currentcarrying steJ]arator fields are presented for various plasma cu?rrent profiles(flattened, parabolic and peaked) and helical fields (l=2 and Z=3). The lineargrowth rate is calculated by solving linearized magnetohydrodynamic equation asinitial and boundary value problem for various cases of plasma parameters, fieldconfigurations and boundary conditions. An I=2 helical field stabilizes the tearing mode but l=3 helical field has atendency to destabilize it. Effects of the boundary condition on the growth rateare appreciable when a singular surface is near plasma boundarz,' and plasmaresistivity is not small.
