Polarized Raman and infrared reflection spectra of KNO3 crystals have beenmeasured at room temperature. Raman and infrared transmissiomt spectra ofthe high temperature phase of KN03 have been also measured. The frequenciesof the transverse (TO) and longitudinal (LO) modes of the infrared active vibra-tions of the crystal have been obtained from the observed reflectivities. The latticedynamical analysis of the optical active vibrations of the room temperature phaseof KN03 has been ?nade based on a rigid ion model which includes effective ioniccharges and short-range repulsive force constants. Short-range force constants forthe non-bonded metal-oxygen and o>cygen-oxygen interactions have been defer-mined by the least squares method using the observed Raman frequencies.
