Linear Instability of Pipe Poiseuille Flow

The stability of fluid flow in a circular pipe to infinitesimal disturbances isinvestigated by making use of a method of eigenfunction expansion, taking intoaccount the three-dimensional variation of disturbance velocities. Numericalcomputations show that the Poiseuille flow is unstable for the Reynolds numbersbeyond a critical value with any one of axial wave numbers considered. Theminimum critical ReynoJds number corresponds to rotationally symmetric spiralmode of oscillations and is found to be 600. The critical Reynolds numbers for theaxisymmetric and non-symmetric modes are 40000 and 8600, respectively.
