On the basis of Onsager's phenomenological equation of motion, the generalizedform of susceptibility is derived. This includes the damped harmonic oscillator(DHO), Van Vleck-Weisskorf and Fr6hlich suscer>tibilit>z (VWF) and Debyerelaxational model as different limiting cases, and is equivalent to that obtainedfrom the Bloch equation for the Ising model in a transverse field which are usedin the pseudo-spin model for KDP-type crystals. Characteristics and mutualrelations of susceptibilities are discussed with an emphasis on the differencebetween DHO and VWF. For a heavily damped mode, DHO becomes difficult torhvsicallv interrret since the eixenfrecvuencv and the damrin: factor ma>z losetheir origittal meaning. In such cases, the outly important parameter is the distancefrom the origin to the pole of z(co) in the complex o-plane.
