Alignment destroying cross sections of the 2p. state of neon colliding with He'and He' atoms are measured by means of optical-rf double resonance of a He-Nelaser. The cross sections measured are (8.88 .E-0.33) x 10-" cm' and (6.89 f0.37) x10 " cm', respectively. Importance of the short range overlapping force for thesecollisions is emphasized, rather than the long range van der Waals interaction.
