A general theory is presented to derive the coarse-grained equations governingthe macroscopic behaviour of slow viscous flow in suspensions from the standpointof statistical continuum mechanics. A system of equations governing the macro-scopic behaviour of viscous flow in suspensions can be obtained using formalperturbation methods and coarse-graining procedures. The coarse-grainedequations lead to an expression for the dependence of the effective viscosity ofsuspensions on the concentration of particles p. In the dilute limit our resultreduces to Einstein's theory of dilute suspensions, and the deviation fromBatchelor's formula is not significant to the second order in cfi. Even for moreconcentrated suspensions, the result is in good agreement with experimental dataobtained by Vand.
