Coulomb Deflection Effects on L-Vacancy Production

Z,-subshell vacancy-production cross sections were measured in equal-velocity(0.3- to 1.25 MeV/a.m.u.) proton and deuteron bombardments of Au, Pb, Th,and U targets, allowing a unique determination of the Coulomb deflection correc-lion factor. Corrections to the meastu"ed cross sections for the energy loss ofthe projectile in ionizing the inner-shell electron are made. The meastu'ed Coulombdeflection factors are compared with various theories. Previously measuredCoulomb deflection factors for A-vacancy production are re-evaluated, takinginto account projectile-energy loss.
